Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the XIX Congress of the International Union of Crystallography, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, 6-15 August 2002. The Programme Committee has compiled a rich programme covering the full range of crystallographic applications.

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the IUCr I can promise both young and old a truly fruitful and interesting experience in Geneva, in the welcoming atmosphere of our Congress.

Henk Schenk
President, IUCr

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The triennial Congress and General Assembly of the IUCr is the flagship event of our professional organization. It serves as a meeting ground and a showcase for the myriad of disciplines and activities that make up the community of crystallographers. We know that our colleagues on the Organizing and Programme Committees share with us the honor and the pleasure of organizing this Congress and look forward to sharing in the excitement of discovering new science and the chance to meet old friends and colleagues and make new ones.

The planning and preparation for conference of this size and complexity take place over many years, and this one is no exception. We are all perhaps more acutely aware of the unsettled and unsettling times in which we live, and those circumstances led to the change in venue from the original site for IUCr 2002 of Jerusalem to Geneva. We are particularly grateful to our Swiss colleagues for their hospitality and cooperation in facilitating that move. The entire conference staff will continue to work to make this one of the most successful and enjoyable IUCr congresses. We look forward to your participation and to greeting you personally in Geneva next summer.
